In many low- and middle-income health systems, access to timely, high-quality diagnostics is still limited by cost, infrastructure, and distance from central laboratories. The result is delayed decision-making, unnecessary referrals, and weaker care for patients who most need reliable information quickly. LookingGlass is working to close that gap by bringing affordable, laboratory-quality diagnostics closer to the point of care, with an initial focus on CD4 testing for HIV and new applications in antimicrobial resistance in Africa.
Looking Glass is building a new generation of diagnostic platforms that combine precision optics, microfluidic engineering, and artificial intelligence to deliver laboratory-quality results in compact, field-deployable formats. Our core platform uses AI-assisted image cytometry to analyze cells from a single drop of whole blood, integrating microfluidic sample handling, high-resolution optical detection, and deep learning-based classification into one system. The result is a fast, reliable, and quantitative diagnostic approach designed to bring high-quality testing closer to the point of care without depending on the infrastructure of a central laboratory.
Looking Glass is led by a multidisciplinary team with deep expertise in optical engineering, microfluidics, artificial intelligence, manufacturing and human-centred design for diagnostics, alongside a strong understanding of the African health sector. Our strength lies in combining advanced scientific and technical capability with practical insight into the realities of health delivery in low- and middle-income settings. We work closely with partners in manufacturing, regulatory, and commercialization to ensure that strong science can translate into scalable diagnostic solutions with real-world relevance and impact.
